I fumbled with the key. With an effort, I pinched the key between my forefinger and thumb. The thumb just didn't want to oppose the finger. I entered my flat and sighed.
”Terminal,” he had said, Dr. Burton at the sports injuries clinic. ”Of course, we can put stiffeners in your shoes, but they'll only have a temporary effect."
I walked to the refrigerator and took out a banana. Finding it hard to peel it with my fingers, I applied my teeth. In my distraught state, I hardly even tasted it. I beat my chest in my misery, convulsively gripping my knee with the other hand.
'Ooh, ooh, Dr.
Burton, is there no cure?" I had asked.
”I'm afraid not.
You have the worst case of Morton's Toe I have ever seen. It has
entered the tertiary stage.”
